Troubleshooting My Furnace

As soon as winter rolled around this year, I knew that I had a problem. Our home heating system didn't seem to be working well, and it was really frustrating. We would wake up to absolutely frosty mornings in our own home, and so I decided to pull out the user's manual. I started researching different furnace problems and it occurred to me that the issue might be the filters. I checked them, and you wouldn't believe how full of dust and debris they were. After they were replaced and the air handler was blown out, my furnace started working again. Check out this blog for more information about troubleshooting your furnace.

How Often Does HVAC Maintenance Need To Be Done?

It's impossible to overstress the importance of maintenance on an HVAC system. HVAC systems are used for much of the year and any system that works that hard will suffer a degree of wear and tear. Without regular maintenance, your HVAC system can quickly enter a cycle of breakdown and repair. This will also shorten the lifespan of your HVAC system.

However, it's important to also consider the issue of time. How often should you perform maintenance activities to keep your HVAC system in good shape?

The Recommended Maintenance Frequency

In most cases, it's recommended that your HVAC system should be maintained at least once every year. Many manufacturers consider this time period to be sufficient for catching any developing issues that can lead to greater complications if left unaddressed. Many manufacturers will go as far as including annual maintenance as one of the conditions for the warranty.

However, annual maintenance is only the recommendation when you're dealing with a fairly new HVAC system. As your system ages, you may start to notice an increased number of breakdowns. In such cases, it will be a good idea to increase the frequency of maintenance to at least twice a year.

It's Not Just About Time

The annual HVAC maintenance is also recommended with the idea that it will be used within certain conditions. However, as many homeowners know, conditions within the house can vary greatly. For example, if you live in a coastal area, the saline conditions increase the risk of corrosion in certain metals. Therefore, the HVAC system may need to be inspected more frequently.

If you also leave in a very dusty environment or a hot environment that requires the use of the HVAC throughout the year, you may have to increase the frequency of maintenance.

When Should You Perform Maintenance?

The issue of how often you should perform maintenance goes hand-in-hand with the issue of when exactly you should perform these activities. If you're talking about a cooling system, the worst period to go looking for a technician is in summer. Technicians are likely to be swamped during this period and you could end up at the back of a long waiting list.

For cooling systems, you should find an HVAC contractor in spring while for heating systems, fall is the best time to have the system checked. This is also a good idea since it'll be just before these systems go into heavy use. To learn more, contact companies like Dual Temp Co Inc.
